A little planning helps

When should you start?

These are Honda Financial Services’ planning recommendations, not new deadlines added to your lease. Your account instructions and agreement determine what applies.

  1. About six months before your final payment

    Consider your next move.

Talk with Ide about your choices. If you want another vehicle, we can help you compare models and inventory.

  2. Two to three months before

    Plan the inspection.

Let Ide help you plan your next steps. Contact HFS’s Lease Maturity Center and follow its instructions to arrange the licensed inspection.

  3. About one week before returning

    Arrange the handoff.

Contact Ide to confirm your return appointment and what to bring.

  4. After the return

    Follow up with HFS.

Notify the Lease Maturity Center that you returned the vehicle. Keep your receipt and review any final account charges.

Before you return it

Mileage, wear and the inspection.

Compare your odometer reading with your lease’s mileage allowance. Any excess-mileage charge is based on your agreement, not a universal rate.

Honda Financial Services offers a free pre-return inspection through its licensed inspection company. Have your account number and VIN ready. Follow HFS’s scheduling instructions; a routine service visit is not a substitute for its lease-end inspection.

Review the inspection report and HFS wear guidelines for items such as body damage, glass, tires and missing equipment. Ask about findings before deciding whether to make repairs, and keep any repair receipts.

Over miles or concerned about damage?

Talk with Ide before deciding. We can help you compare your next steps and understand which potential mileage or wear charges to confirm with HFS. The vehicle may be inspected again after return.

If you want to keep it

Want to buy out your lease? Start with Ide.

  1. Talk with our team. Let us know you’d like to keep your Honda. We’ll help you understand the purchase process and explore payment or financing options.
  2. Review a current HFS purchase quote. We can help you understand the quote, applicable taxes and fees, and payment timing. You can also request a quote through your HFS account or at 800-708-6555; some accounts require a representative.
  3. Make a plan for the purchase. We’ll help you work through the documents and title and registration steps. Notify HFS of your intent to purchase and follow its account-specific instructions. Any financing is subject to approval.

HFS limits lease purchases to the lessee or an authorized Honda or Acura dealer. State and account requirements can differ; confirm the required documents and purchase route before sending payment.

Returning the vehicle and settling the lease are separate steps.

Remaining payments, excess mileage, chargeable wear, a contractual turn-in fee and other applicable obligations may still be due. HFS may bill end-of-term charges after the return. Keep a copy of your signed return receipt; it confirms the handoff, not a release from the lease agreement.

Ready for your appointment

Your lease-return checklist.

Confirm the appointment with Ide before bringing the vehicle in. HFS’s checklist includes:

  • Clean the vehicle and remove personal belongings.
  • Bring every key and remote.
  • Bring the owner’s manual and maintenance records.
  • Bring the inspection report, if provided, and completed-repair receipts.
  • Return original headrests and removable seats, where applicable.
  • Bring HFS return paperwork; complete the return receipt and odometer disclosure, and keep a copy.

Ask our team to confirm any additional identification or registration documents, and how to handle your plates and insurance for your situation.

A few more answers

Common lease-end questions.

What if my Honda lease is with a different lender?

Start with Ide and let us know who holds your lease. We can help you identify the next steps and confirm whether we can accept the return. The Honda Financial Services guidance on this page applies to HFS leases; other lenders may require a different inspection, return location or purchase process.

Can I return my Honda before the lease ends?

Talk with Ide first. We’ll help you explore your choices and identify what needs to be confirmed with your lender before you make a decision. HFS must confirm the amounts and requirements for your account; returning early does not automatically end your payment responsibilities.

Does Ide perform the official lease-end inspection?

For an HFS lease, arrange the inspection through HFS’s designated licensed inspection company. Its report is separate from a dealer appraisal or service inspection. Use the official HFS resources below for scheduling instructions.

Will I owe a turn-in fee or qualify for a waiver?

Check your lease agreement and confirm with HFS. Fees vary by contract and state, and any available benefits have eligibility conditions. Ask HFS whether any current lease-end benefits apply to your account.

What if I’m not sure whether to buy, return or replace it?

Tell us your model, approximate mileage, lease-end timing and what you’d like from your next vehicle—or whether you’d prefer to keep this one. We’ll help you compare the choices using current information.
